Prestigious National Publication Rates Mercy Health Partners
Among the Nation’s Top-Rated Destinations for Heart Surgery

Muskegon, MI, Nov. 18, 2010 - Consumer Reports, in its October issue, listed West Michigan Cardiothoracic Surgeons and Mercy Health Partners among 50 of the country’s top-rated heart-bypass surgery groups. Mercy Health Partners received the Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ (STS) three-star rating — the highest possible — based on the latest data, from July 1, 2008 to Dec. 31, 2009.

Only about 13 percent of the approximately 1,000 hospitals in the nation with open heart programs earn three stars. Mercy Health Partners’ open-heart program is one of only two in Michigan to be recognized as one of the top 50 programs nationally.

“I am not at all surprised by this recognition. We have an outstanding team of dedicated experts,” said Dr. Charles O’Brien, medical director and past cardiothoracic surgeon of MHP’s thirty-year cardiac surgery program.

MHP’s senior cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Theodore Boeve said, “I am privileged to participate in the care of these patients. This recognition is a tribute to my partners at West Michigan Cardiothoracic Surgeons, all the physicians who participate in the care of our patients, and the many people on our team at Mercy Health Partners.”

The coronary arteries of the heart can narrow or be blocked by fatty deposits that build up over time and cause a heart attack. Surgeons bypass the bad portion of artery with a section taken from another part of the body to restore blood flow.

“Since the inception of Mercy Health Partner’s cardiothoracic program, many physicians, nurses, and other professionals have developed expertise in caring for these patients. Our community benefits from their expertise every day,” Boeve said.

MHP’s cardiac surgery surgeons, in conjunction/cooperation with MHP’s Quality and Care Transformation Department, continually scan outcomes data collected in the STS National Cardiac Surgery Database. The group meets regularly to review this data seeking opportunities to improve patient care through process improvement.

The STS 3 Star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) represents the highest rating awarded to heart surgery practices participating in the national database. The rating is a composite based upon 11 individual National Quality Forum (NQF)-endorsed, evidence-based measures of quality in CABG surgery. The award is based on a comprehensive rating system that allows for comparisons regarding the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. This system is audited for accuracy in reporting.
